The knock at the door was soft, almost polite.

Davin’s hands trembled as he reached for the latch. He had hoped, prayed, that this day would never come, that somehow the debt had been forgotten, erased by time itself. But time was the currency, and the collector never forgot.

The man standing in the doorway was dressed in fine, dark silks, his coat long and unblemished despite the muddy streets. A gloved hand adjusted the cuff of his sleeve before he met Davin’s terrified gaze. His eyes gleamed like polished onyx, devoid of warmth.

“Master Davin,” the collector intoned, his voice smooth as oil. “You owe.”

Davin swallowed hard. “I—I just need more time.”

The collector’s lips curled slightly. “Indeed you do.”

He stepped inside, gliding rather than walking, his very presence sucking the warmth from the air. Davin backed away, pressing against the rough wooden wall, shaking his head.

“Please,” he begged. “There must be another way.”

“There is not.” The collector reached into his coat and withdrew a slender, glass-like device, its surface swirling with ephemeral light. “The contract was signed. The debt is due.”

Davin gasped as his body convulsed, his breath hitching in a strangled choke. He felt it instantly—the years peeling away. His muscles shrank, his posture bent, skin tightening over brittle bones. His fingers, once steady and strong, curled like dying leaves. His vision blurred, dimming as his youth drained into the device in the collector’s hand, the swirling light growing brighter with each stolen second.

Within moments, Davin was unrecognizable. A frail, withered husk stood where a young man had once been.

The collector exhaled contentedly and snapped the device shut, tucking it away with the care of a jeweler securing a rare gem. He took one last look at his latest acquisition, then turned for the door.

“You paid your debt,” he said over his shoulder. “Consider yourself free.”

The door shut softly behind him, leaving only the sound of Davin’s ragged breaths in the dim, dying light of the room.
