When the watch malfunctioned, everything in Felix’s life shattered—except for him.

He’d been 36 then, a tinkerer working in a workshop filled with gears, schematics, and endless cups of cold coffee. The pocket watch had been his prized possession, a relic he’d inherited from his father. It wasn’t just a timepiece; it was a prototype. A crude, dangerous attempt at personal time manipulation, made long before the $TIME devices became standard issue for Time Keepers.

Felix had always been curious, pushing the boundaries of what the watch could do. One night, alone in the workshop, he decided to test its limits. He had calculated everything—or so he thought.

The moment he activated the mechanism, a low hum filled the room, followed by a deafening crack. The air seemed to fold in on itself. His body jerked violently, as if caught in an invisible current, and then—nothing.

When he woke up, the world was the same, but he wasn’t.

Felix stumbled to his feet, feeling strange. His clothes hung loose, the sleeves of his shirt falling over hands that were smaller, pudgier. He looked down and saw tiny, unfamiliar fingers clutching the watch’s chain. Panic surged as he scrambled to a nearby mirror.

The reflection staring back was a 12-year-old boy.

At first, he thought it was another trick of the watch, some temporary side effect of the malfunction. Days passed, then weeks. His body remained frozen, stuck in pre-adolescence, even as his mind remained sharp, burdened with the memories and knowledge of an adult.

He couldn’t go back to his old life. His colleagues, his friends—none of them would recognize him. He tried to blend in, to start over, but the endless stares and questions about why he seemed to have no family made it impossible.

Eventually, he withdrew. He wandered from place to place, keeping to the shadows, relying on the skills he’d honed over his adult years. The pocket watch, damaged but functional, hung from a chain around his neck like a curse. He didn’t dare tamper with it again, afraid of what it might do next.

Over time, Felix learned to adapt. His youthful appearance became his disguise, his secret weapon. No one suspected the boy in the oversized hoodie of knowing how to dismantle a time device or hack into secure systems.

But inside, the burden of his eternal youth weighed heavily. He watched the world age around him, people he cared about grow older, and still, he remained a child. His laughter became hollow, his smiles forced.

The only solace he found was in the ticking of the watch. It was a cruel reminder of the moment everything had gone wrong, but it was also the last link to his past.
